The Mellors Group is delighted to confirm its successful application for the Cultural Development Fund in its joint bid with Magna Vitae, led by ELDC and the Connected Coast Board.
As the sole recipient of the fund in the East Midlands, the unique partnership demonstrates a shared vision and commitment to investing in a better future for Skegness and the surrounding area, working towards the company’s ultimate goal to transform the Pier and the connected public realm, and working with the Embassy Theatre in their creation of the UK’s first ‘Culture House’ development.
Collectively, these projects will enhance the town’s existing cultural activities offer and facilitate educational, health, well-being and community projects that will significantly improve & encourage learning, business, and tourism opportunities for the wider area.
This scheme will revive heritage features, put culture at the heart of the foreshore’s recovery, provide pathways to creative employment and active cultural participation and boost the scale of festivals and events to stimulate the year-round visitor economy and increase the desirability of the area.
In addition to the £5m fund investment, the Mellors Group have committed in excess of £2m to the project to fund restoration of the street-facing façade; refurbishment of the remaining pier deck including access improvements; new outdoor performance spaces, including an amphitheatre; new community & creative workspace through the transformation of old beach huts on the seafront, and an inspirational new public realm.
This transformation of the Pier on-land is a vital first phase in a long-term ambition to restore its 582m original length and heart of the community.
